Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada but grew up in the United States. She's been a media critic since 1995. Feminist Frequency was founded by Sarkeesian. The website hosts videos which include commentary on the representations of women that are prevalent in the media and popular culture of today. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic, blogger and award-winning feminist for over 10 years. Feminist Frequency examines the way women are depicted in pop culture. She's determined to dismantle stereotypes about women and how they are portrayed in popular media. In addition she aims to create the awareness of harassment on social media targeted at women, and other the marginalized communities of people. Sarkeesian also holds a York University master's in social philosophy, political and philosophical thinking. In addition to being an acclaimed public speaker, she has given presentations at TEDxWomen conference and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. At a young age Sarkeesian was captivated by issues of gender identity and feminist thinking. While still at school in 2009, she created her Feminist Frequency Website. This ambitious woman planned to create an online series that examined the gender roles in games but was the target of a harassment campaign online. However, the attacks did not discourage her. She was only able to strengthen her position in her role as a feminist journalist. She has won many awards for her contributions to feminism. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her role as a critic of media and founded Feminist Frequency. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit organization that explores the portrayals of women in popular culture of today.
